Mr Potato Head Characters

The Mr. Potato Head Family Has Some Fun Characters

I had a Mr. Potato Head back in the 1960s, and I must say, he was one of my favorite toys.

Back then, there weren't a lot of options for choosing a spud to dress up like there are today. Now you can get Mr. Potato Head in all sorts of characters like these:

~ Mrs. Potato Head, shown here

~ Captain American Potato Head

~ Star Wars Darth Tater, Artoo-Potatoo, and Spud Trooper

~ and so many more!

This fun toy is a great gift for young kids or to set out as a conversation piece at a party. I've seen more than one adult succumb to placing those features on a plastic tater.

A Brief History of the Mr. Potato Head Family

In 1952, George Lerner invented what later would become known as Mr. Potato Head. As a child he'd stuck objects into potatoes from his mom's garden to make what he called "funny face people." When he tried to sell the idea to toy manufacturers, they thought it was wrong to encourage wasting food this way so no one nibbled on this new toy idea.

The first introduction of this toy was when the pieces (eyes, nose, mouth) were tucked into breakfast cereal. You had to use your own potato or other fruit or vegetable.

The toys were later sold, and in 1964, an actual plastic head was included making it truly Mr. Potato Head! From there, many versions of the spud have evolved.
